New Year Resolution #6: Good-bye Facebook!

The sixth New Year Resolution on my list is to abstain from Facebook for all of 2012.  So I deactivated my account.  Facebook had become a major distraction for me.

What motivated me to make the break once and for all was, ironically, a link to an essay that my niece Martha posted on Facebook, "The Facebook Eye."  The gist of the article is that we who use social media have reconfigured our consciousness.  Everything we do, say, or see is fodder for a photo, a check-in, an update, a link, or a note.

"Facebook fixates the present as always a future past."  I had to read that statement a few times to really understand it, but then it was as if seeing my reflection in a mirror.  I didn't like what I saw and decided to make the break so I could change.

I felt relieved and free just by the very act of deactivating my Facebook account.  So far I have no regrets.

1.  Begin each day with cheerful actions and hopeful thoughts.

2. Finish writing my Christmas cards by Epiphany.

3.  Begin a regimen that includes losing weight through diet and exercise.

4.  Develop bi-browser skills.

5.  Read certain books
